Duerring gets one-year contract extension as Kanawha County superintendent

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Board of Education renewed its contract with Superintendent Ron Duerring for one year.

Four board members voted Wednesday in favor of the renewal. Board member Pete Thaw was not at the meeting.

Duerring will begin his 20th year as school system superintendent in July. His salary next year will be $160,500, the same amount of his current contract. The contract also includes an extra week of paid vacation.

Board member Ryan White said the board was impressed with Duerring’s performance last year dealing with the effects of the June 2016 flood and declining revenue.

“Other school districts probably haven’t fared as well as we have,” he said.

White said there was and continues to be a lot of work that had to be done to get reimbursements from federal agencies for damaged property.

“He says its 50 percent of his time,” White said.

The board reviewed Duerring because state law requires an annual review.
