MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — University earned a regular season split with rival and Class AAA No. 6 Morgantown on Wednesday night, beating the Mohigans 7-2 from Monongalia County Ballpark.
“That is the epitome of the things you have to do in order to win a baseball game,” said University coach Buck Riggleman. “We had good, quality at-bats, put the ball in play, we were aggressive on the bases and we put the ball down when we bunted. It was a very well played ballgame.”
Cam Stoldt picked up the complete game win for the Hawks on the mound, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out four.
“Morgantown is a quality team, we just came out fired up,” Stoldt said. “We wanted to win. That wasn’t just me pitching that was our team. It was a blast. I was just trying to keep my head straight and stay focused with my team behind me.”
The Hawks (10-7) have been plagued with weather cancellations throughout the spring, but captured some momentum heading into next week’s sectional action.
“This could be the start of something big,” Riggleman said. “That’s a pretty big win. They’re a rival for us and it’s always a big game with Morgantown. They’re a very good team – they aren’t No. 6 in the state for no reason. This could get the boat going down the river where we want to go.”
University freshman shortstop Kaden Metheny finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Hawks, while Conner Kelly and Michael DeFelice both added two hits apiece for Morgantown (15-7) in the loss.
