Poca High student dies from injuries suffered in truck wreck

POCA, W.Va. — A Poca High School student died Wednesday night from injuries suffered in a truck crash last weekend, the Putnam County sheriff’s department said.

William Steven Smith, 17, of Poca, was critically injured in Saturday’s wreck on Poca River Road. Smith’s truck went off the road, hit an embankment and went airborne before the cab of the truck slammed into a tree, according to deputies.

Smith was being treated at CAMC General in Charleston where he died at around 5:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Poca High students had a “Will” Power Spirit Week and a raffle in hopes of raising funds to help with their classmate’s recovery.
