Louisiana Tech plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning and eliminated Marshall from the Conference USA Tournament with a 4-2 win Friday night in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Bulldogs scored what would turn out to be the game winning run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Tori Charles legged out an infield single, scoring Karlee Jensen from third to give La Tech the 3-2 lead. With runners on the corners, La Tech added to its lead, as Charles successfully got into a rundown between first and second allowing the runner from third to score.
“It feels pretty awesome. It was an emotional game and I think it was probably the best game of the tournament thus far in my opinion. A lot of gamesmanship on both sides in terms of just doing it, but the emotions were high on both teams and both teams wanted it so bad,” said Louisiana Tech coach Mark Montgomery.
The Herd plated a pair of runs in the third inning but Bulldogs’ pitcher Krystal De La Cruz kept the potent Marshall offense in check the rest of the way.
Marshall’s Jordan Dixon struck out seven in a losing effort and allowed just one earned run.
La Tech will face FIU in the tournament championship game Saturday afternoon.
