OMAR, W.Va. — A Logan County woman was arrested Monday after allegedly beating the man she was tasked to help.
West Virginia State Police arrested Tina Hatfield, who worked as a caretaker for seven years for Shane Curtis.
Curtis is blind because of a shotgun blast to the head 12 years ago.
According to Curtis, his relationship with Hatfield changed about two years ago when she started to abuse him, both physically and verbally.
Curtis told Hatfield to leave his Omar home after she cursed at his friends. She hit Curtis in the testicles before leaving.
When she returned that evening, she told Curtis he “wouldn’t live to see tomorrow,” then hit him with a blunt object in his face and head.
Curtis called 911, resulting in Hatfield leaving the scene before police arrived. Authorities found blood-stained floors and a bent metal broomstick, according to a criminal complaint.
Police arrested Hatfield following a short chase on the property and her hiding in a Ford Ranger. She was charged with malicious assault, fleeing on foot and the malicious abuse of an incapacitated adult with bodily injury.
Two dogs were in the vehicle, both of which died from heat-related issues.
Emergency responders transported Curtis to Logan Regional Medical Center.
Hatfield was placed at Southwestern Regional Jail Tuesday instead of a $1 million bail.
