WV Treasurer’s Office to host SMART 5.29K Run/Walk

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Treasurer’s Office is encouraging the public to sign up for its SMART 5.29K Run/Walk to benefit foster children in the Mountain State.

The Run/Walk is this Saturday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.

The race starts at 8 a.m. Registration is at 7 a.m.

The event raises money for SMART 529 College Savings Plans for children adopted out of the foster care system in West Virginia.

“It’s money that will go into their 529 accounts or establish a 529 account for them, so that they can start saving for college and just give them a little hand up,” said Gina Joynes, communications director for State Treasurer John Perdue.

Joynes, a guest on “580 Live” heard on MetroNews affiliate 580-WCHS in Charleston, said the $30 registration fee will be invested into the SMART 529 program.

“I think it’s really important that we give every child here in West Virginia the opportunity to dream big and make plans to go to college,” she said.

The Treasurer’s Office is partnering with Mission West Virginia and Frameworks who will select families to receive college savings money.

“Last year, there were 12 families (12 children) that were awarded SMART 529 accounts in the amount of $1,200, so it was quite a bit of money invested for these children,” Joynes said.

May 29 is SMART 529 Day in West Virginia.
