Ex-Michigan standout Gondrezick transfers to West Virginia

Kysre Gondrezick, a former Parade All-American who left Michigan late in her freshman season, signed with West Virginia as a transfer Friday.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Michigan guard Kysre Gondrezick, one of the Big Ten’s top freshmen last season, has transferred to West Virginia and signed Friday, according to the school.

While Gondrezick must sit out next season per NCAA transfer rules, the former top-30 recruit becomes a huge component of the 2018-19 campaign.

“We are thrilled to have Kysre join our Mountaineer family,” West Virginia coach Mike Carey said in the release. “Kysre has the capability of playing several positions because of basketball IQ and her scoring abilities.

“She’s capable of making everyone around her better. Kysre’s passing abilities, along with her scoring prowess, make her a big-time threat. In addition to her athletic ability, she has a strong academic skill set, as well. Her tremendous skills will bring our program to the next level.”

The 5-foot-9 guard produced 14.9 points and 3.6 rebounds this past season at Michigan, where she averaged 27 minutes per game before leaving the Wolverines during their run to the WNIT championship.

A Parade All-American at Benton Harbor, Mich., she averaged 40 points per game as a high school senior, claimed Michigan’s Miss Basketball award and was her class salutatorian.

Gondrezick comes from a basketball lineage.

Her father Grant starred at Pepperdine and played two seasons in the NBA, while her uncle Glenn was a member of UNLV’s Final Four team in 1977 before spending six years with the Knicks and Nuggets.

Her mom, Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick, played on Louisiana Tech’s 1988 national championship team.
