Illinois outlasts Marshall in NCAA softball regional

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Illinois defeated Marshall 3-2 in 12 innings on Friday afternoon in an NCAA softball tournament regional game.

Illinois (38-18) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as Breanna Wonderly picked up the win on the mound. Wonderly pitched all 12 innings for the Illini, while Marshall’s Jordan Dixon suffered the difficult loss, going 11 1/3 innings on the mound for the Herd.

Morgan Zerkle led the Herd with two hits on the day, while Annie Fleming collected three hits for Illinois.

Marshall (41-11) will play in an elimination contest on Saturday.
