PRINCETON, W.Va. — A Virginia couple were found guilty Friday on abuse and neglect charges in connection with the treatment of the man’s 87-year-old mother.
Monty Bone, 58, and his wife Sonja, 51, both of Bluefield, Va., face decades in prison after Nancy Bone was brought to the Bluefield Regional Medical Center in 2015 showing signs of abuse.
Physicians contacted the Bluefield Police Department after noticing Nancy Bone was extremely dehydrated with low sodium, had severe bed sores on her right hip and shoulder and bruises on her right ear and face. They also said she had some broken ribs in different stages of healing.
The trial began Tuesday in Mercer County Circuit Court, and the jury was in deliberations for less than six hours Friday. Monty and Sonja Bone were found guilty on one count of abuse of an incapacitated adult, a charge with a two-to-10 year prison sentence.
Monty Bone was found guilty on three additional counts of neglect of an incapacitated adult, while Sonja Bone was found guilty on two counts of the same charge. Both were also found guilty on one charge of misdemeanor conspiracy and not guilty of malicious assault.
Monty Bone faces between eight and 41 years in prison, while Sonja Bone faces six to 31 years. Both are free on bond, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.
Nancy Bone died later in 2015 but the judge instructed the jury her death was not part of the case.
