Justice signs order protecting state cyber information

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Gov. Jim Justice signed an executive order May 18 regarding the protection of information collected by executive agencies.

Executive Order No. 3-17 instructs the West Virginia Board of Risk and Insurance Management to protect identifiable information. The board will also maintain the State Privacy Office, which will be responsible for issuing policies and providing awareness related to privacy.

The privacy office was previously under the Department of Health and Human Resources’ Health Care Authority.

The Chief Technology Officer, the head of the West Virginia Office of Technology, will also have to conduct cyber risk management oversight in order to protect this data.

“The importance of protecting our state’s systems against cyber security threats is crucial,” said John Myers, secretary of the Department of Administration. “The CTO will heighten his organization’s role in providing more outreach to our employees and citizens to ensure awareness against these risks.”
