MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. — A Maryland prisoner was arrested Thursday following a high-speed chase with West Virginia State Police.
David William Schultz, 30, of Temple Hills, Md., was serving 18 years for armed robbery. He escaped from custody of the Popular Hill Pre-Release Unit, according to court documents.
According to a criminal complaint, troopers received a tip that Schultz was in Monongalia County. He was reported driving a red Chevrolet Aveo which was stolen in Maryland.
A trooper noticed the car at a gas station at Mid-Atlantic Market in Morgantown. Schultz allegedly fled past two state police cruisers and a Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department vehicle.
Schultz entered Interstate 68 eastbound, leaving the interstate briefly at the Bruceton Mills exit. He then crossed the median, traveling eastbound in the westbound lane.
Schultz turned around the the Hazelton exit, crossed the media and began going west in the eastbound lanes.
He stopped the vehicle shortly afterwards and fled into nearby woods, where he was caught.
Schultz was charged with being a fugitive from justice, felony fleeing and felony receiving or transferring a stolen vehicle.
