WV Fire Marshal: 110 year-old church destroyed in fire

MCMECHEN, W.Va. — A church fire in Marshall County is under investigation, according to tweets Sunday from the state Fire Marshal’s Office.

Authorities said the fire occurred at around 1 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of God in McMechen. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

The church was 110 years old.

A firefighter with the McMechen Volunteer Fire Department was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. He has since been released.

In 2015, another church fire occurred in the neighboring town of Benwood at St. John Catholic Church.
