Autopsy expected to confirm theory in Harrison County father-son shooting

LUMBERPORT, W.Va. — A Wednesday morning autopsy is expected to confirm that a Harrison County son shot his father in the head a single time, killing him Tuesday.

State Police Sgt. Mark Kiddy confirmed as much Wednesday morning. Michael Griffith, 30, of Clarksburg, is accused of shooting his father Clifford Allen Powers, 61, of Harrison County, outside of a home off Gregory’s Run Road between Lumberport and Wilsonburg Tuesday morning.

Police believe Griffith’s motive stems from allegations of parental abuse. Investigators confirmed Griffith confronted Powers Tuesday morning for a “brief period” before allegedly shooting him in the head with a Mossberg .22 rifle.

Police believe the weapon was stolen out of a Clarksburg residence, but could not confirm that Wednesday morning.

A date for a probable cause hearing has not been set yet by Harrison County Magistrate Tammy Marple. That must be done in ten days.

State Police Corporal Steven Swiger is investigating.
