Mingo County authorities dig for possible murder victim

CHATTEROY, W.Va. –– An anonymous tip has led to the search for a possible body in Mingo County.

The Mingo County Sheriff’s Department received the tip that a man talking in a bar may have bragged about killing somebody in 2008 or 2009. The tip indicated the victim, who was around 70 years old, in the case was buried at a location in the community of Chatteroy.

Investigators with the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department followed up on the tip Tuesday evening with a cadaver dog and got a hit at the location. The burial site is underneath a building in the yard of a home.

Officials have moved the outbuilding and have begun excavation of the site Wednesday, but did not find anything.

Officials haven’t revealed the identity of the man who bragged about the murder nor have they revealed the identity of the suspected victim. Officials say there are no open investigations into any missing persons in the area, and is asking anyone to come forward with information about any missing relatives.
