WASHINGTON — After former FBI Director James Comey’s testified before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins said it is important partisan politics remain out of the investigations into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election.
Comey told senators Thursday he believed he was fired by President Trump on May 9 because of the inquiry, even after informing Trump he was not under investigation.
“There’s been a lot of political rhetoric in recent weeks in anticipation of Comey’s testimony that led up to his firing,” said Jenkinsm R-W.Va. “I think we need to be led by the facts, not by the politicians that are more focused on grabbing headlines and soundbites.”
Claiming Comey had lost the trust of Trump and the public, Jenkins said special counsel Robert Mueller will conduct a fair probe.
“I’m looking forward to letting the investigation go wherever the facts might lead,” he said. “At the end of a true non-political, credible fact-finding mission, we will know the real involvement in Russia activity in their efforts to try to impact our election process.”
The 3rd District Congressman said in a May 22 MetroNews interview Democrats “in particular” were vocal about removing Comey in October 2016 following the FBI’s review of emails connected to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server.
