W.Va. delegation not on hand at Virginia shooting incident

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A gunman opened fire on members of Congress Wednesday morning at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.   The shooting left at least four people, including Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise wounded.

MetroNews has confirmed none of West Virginia’s three members of Congress were present at the event.  Representative Evan Jenkins (R-WV3) says the event was a practice for an upcoming baseball game.

“They would go out each morning over the last several weeks in preparation for this charity event that was scheduled for tomorrow night,” said Jenkins speaking with MetroNews Affiliate WEPM Radio in Martinsburg.

Capitol Police on hand intervened and stopped the gunman.

“This is a dangerous world and we know the rhetoric on both sides has gotten to levels I think raise real concern,” Jenkins said. “Regardless of party, we need to take a deep breath and step back. We need to ratchet this politically charged environment down.”
