West hits final shot to give North win over South in Basketball Classic

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Marshall University freshman-to-be Jarrod West hit a fall-away three-point shot Friday night to lift the North to a 108-105 victory over the South in the 2017 West Virginia Athletics Directors Association North South All Star Classic.

West, who led Carksburg Notre Dame to the Class A title in March, got the ball with about 20 seconds left before dribbling the clock down for his dramatic jumper over former Woodrow Wilson High School standout Isaiah Francis. West’s North teammates stormed the floor at the South Charleston Community Center as time ran off the clock before the South could get a timeout called.

West set the pace for the North squad in the first half with 13 of his 20 points while the South’s Luke Frampton, the former Poca High standout who is on his way to Davidson, pumped in 17 for the South in the opening 20 minutes of play. The South trailed by 10, 40-30 with just more than 7 minutes left in the first half but behind Frampton finished the half on a 29-17 run.

The second half seesawed with each team taking a lead but unable to hold it for very long. The South led by 10 at one point, mostly behind the play of DeAundra Murphy, former St. Joe’s standout, but were unable to put the North away.

Ravenswood’s Riley Heatherington, whose next stop will be the University of Charleston, hit several long range jumpers for the North. Heatherington’s biggest play came with 1:15 remaining in the contest when he drove to the basket for a layup, hit it while absorbing contact, and then made the free throw giving the North a 105-104 edge. The South would tie it with a free throw from Murphy before West’s late game heroics.

The win was the first for the North in the last six meetings.

West was awarded MVP honors for the North while Murphy, who finished with 25 points, received the MVP award for the South. West also had seven rebounds and five assists.

Justin Lee (Fairmont Senior) had 13 points and Austin Upton (Philip Barbour) 10 for the North while Frampton finished with 19 and John Dawson (Huntington) 20 for the South.

In the skills competition before the game, Upton won the free throw shooting contest, Seth Brown (Greenbrier East) finished on top of the 3-point competition and Frampton won the dunk contest.
