MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s emphasis on recruiting tight end Jovani Haskins out of high school paid off after all.
The former Rivals three-star recruit from Bergenfield, N.J., has left Miami after a redshirt season and tweeted Saturday that he would be transferring to WVU.
His reveal came 11 days after Miami quarterback Jack Allison announced that he too was bound for Morgantown.
Both must sit out the upcoming season per NCAA transfer rules and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with 2018.
With junior Trevon Wesco the lone scholarship tight end on the roster, the Mountaineers have sought to restock. Along with Haskins, they currently have two tight end commitments for 2018 — Mike O’Laughlin and TJ Ivy, both from the Chicago area.
Leading up to signing day in 2016, the crystal ball panel at 247Sports incorrectly projected Haskins to choose between WVU and Virginia Tech, when instead he signed with the Hurricanes. He also held offers from the likes of Ole Miss, North Carolina, Iowa, Pitt and Rutgers
Haskins was the nation’s No. 18 tight end in the 2016 class according to 247Sports and Rivals ranked him 29th at the position.
Miami coach Mark Richt announced earlier this month that he and Haskins “both felt it was in his best interests to get a fresh start somewhere else.”
As the Canes seek to replace NFL first-rounder David Njoku, Richt had pegged senior Chris Herndon as the starting tight end entering summer. Miami also has four-star commitments for 2018 from Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory.
