CHEAT LAKE, W.Va. — As Tropical Storm Cindy passed through West Virginia Friday, winds caused by the storm were strong enough to cause a tornado in Monongalia County.
The National Weather Service confirmed Sunday a tornado touched down near Cheat Lake in Monongalia County Friday evening.
Most of the damage sustained was in the vicinity of Lakeside Marina and Crab Shack Caribba. Several docks and boats were moved across the marina because of high winds.
Canopies for the boats were strewn about, with one ending up on a power line.
Eyewitnesses said they saw large branches snapping off trees, and some were even uprooted or snapped in half.
Most of the damage that structures received was because of falling trees, but one small establishment next to Crab Shack Caribba had a portion of its roof ripped off.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado touched down after 7:40 p.m. on June 23. Maximum wind speed was estimated to be around 95 miles per hour.
That would put the tornado at EF1, which are tornadoes with wind speeds between 86 and 110 miles per hour.
There were no reported injuries or fatalities.
