Nicholas County man arrested for evading police

NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. — A Nicholas County man is in custody after allegedly fleeing through the woods to avoid police contact.

Deputy J.J. Bailes recieved information that Steven Porter Cogar, 61 of Kessler’s Cross Lanes, was walking in the vicinity of White Water Road.
Cogar was wanted in connection to a previous warrant for delivery of an illegal substance.

Bailes made contact with Cogar and Elizabeth Foster as they walked down the road around 2a.m. the criminal complaint stated.

Cogar, who was armed with a .22 caliber rifle, fled into the woods on foot and dropped the rifle as he attempted to elude police.
Elizabeth Foster was secured by Deputy Bailes and it was later confirmed she had felony warrants and she was taken into custody.

Deputy Bailes attempted to locate Cogar near the spot he entered the woods, but two K-9 units had to be deployed to track down Cogar.

After an hour of searching, the K-9’s were able to lead deputies to a dwelling that Cogar had broken into in an attempt to hide.

Cogar, who had armed himself with a machete, refused to leave the dwelling until a K-9 was deployed according to the press release sent by the Sheriff of Nicholas County.

Cogar was arrested on warrants for delivery, and received additional charges of nighttime burglary, fleeing, and felony possession of a firearm.
