Beer passouts allowed this fall at Marshall football games

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Beginning this fall, football fans at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards Stadium will be able to purchase a beer and walk out of the stadium with it.

Beer sales were approved Wednesday by the university’s Board of Governors. Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert says they decided to keep passouts in place because the fans wanted that.

“We would hope that fans would stay in the stadium and we asked them about that when surveyed them and there was very strong fan sentiment that they did not want to give up the passout option, so we listened to our fans,” Gilbert said on MetroNews “Talkline.”

“We feel like this is going to add to the fan experience.”

Last year, Marshall expanded alcohol sales from the Big Green Room only to include the chair-back seating areas. The BOG on Wednesday voted to expand beer sales to the west side of the stadium.

“When we surveyed several thousand of our fans through the athletic department, we had 74 percent that wanted us to expand the sales, so we’re going to be doing that this fall,” Gilbert said.
