Fourth of July parade returns to Alderson after 2016 flood

ALDERSON, W.Va. — Floats, cars, bicycles, tractors, horses, fire engines and more will make up Tuesday’s Fourth of July Parade in Alderson.

The parade was canceled last year due to high water from the historic June 2016 flood.

“Along the parade route there was, of course, mud and debris from the flood waters. It would’ve been an unhealthy place to be,” said Rick Parker, member of the Alderson’s Fourth of July Committee.

Parker is organizing this year’s parade and said he’s glad the town is coming back together for West Virginia’s biggest Fourth of July celebration taking place this week.

“It’s a great feeling to see folks coming back and renewing old friendships, having our family reunions back at this time of the year,” Parker said.

Parade guests include Governor Jim Justice, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Miss West Virginia and the West Virginia University Mountaineer mascot.

The parade route is three miles long and begins at 10 a.m. on Virginia Street.

This is the 56th year Alderson is holding a Fourth of July celebration. Events started June 24 and will conclude July 5.
