MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A look back at some of the best high school state tournament games from the 2016-2017 academic year.
MetroNews has broadcast rights for the football Super Six, boys and girls basketball state tournaments and the baseball state tournament – those 54 games were used in compiling this list. Games 15-11 are below:
15 – CLASS AAA BOYS BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL: HUNTINGTON 73, UNIVERSITY 65
A game of runs ended with Huntington advancing to its fourth consecutive Class AAA boys basketball state championship game.
University tied the contest up at 42-42 late in the third with a 9-0 run, but the Highlanders pulled away in the fourth with a 9-0 run of their own.
14 – CLASS A GIRLS BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL: WILLIAMSTOWN 65, WHEELING CENTRAL 59
Williamstown trailed No. 2 Wheeling Central by nine points at the half, before storming back for a state tournament semifinal win.
The comeback was sparked by Ashley Morris who finished with 34 of Williamstown’s 65 points. The Yellowjackets went 27 of 42 from the free throw line in the win.
13 – CLASS AA BASEBALL SEMIFINAL: WEIR 6, WAYNE 2
This game provided the biggest upset of the baseball state tournament as Weir ace Michael Mills held the two-seed and 31-win Wayne to just five hits and two runs (one earned), striking out nine.
Spencer Donovan and Chris Gillette both had multi-hit games for the Red Riders offensively as Weir scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
12 – CLASS AA GIRLS BASKETBALL QUARTERFINAL: WINFIELD 49, LINCOLN 43
Freshman ZZ Russell led the Winfield with 23 points as the Generals edged Lincoln in the state tournament quarterfinals.
Leading 32-21 in the fourth, a bank-3 from Meagan Cavender pushed the momentum to Winfield’s favor as the Generals closed the game out down the stretch.
11- CLASS A BOYS BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL: RAVENSWOOD 41, MADONNA 36
Trailing 30-29 in the fourth, Ravenswod’s Isaiah Morgan hit back-to-back 3s to put Ravenswood back in front over six-seed Madonna.
A breakaway layup from Riley Heatherington, with under 10 seconds to go, sealed the win for the Red Devils.
