Woman charged in five-vehicle crash in Harrison County

LOST CREEK, W.Va. — A woman was charged after a five-vehicle accident on Interstate 79 that sent six to the hospital last Thursday.

Loren Hughes has been charged with failure to maintain control after she rear-ended a car and caused a chain reaction, Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny said.

Hughes has also been charged for not having insurance and for two counts of failure to use child restraints, Matheny said.

The wreck occurred just before 5 p.m. Thursday near the 112 mile marker in Lost Creek, within the northbound construction zone.

Four of the vehicles involved in the wreck were either slowed or stopped. Hughes reportedly was distracted by her childrenĀ in the backseat, creating the collision.

Hughes’ two children were flown from the scene after sustaining serious injuries. Deputies said the children have since been released from the hospital.

Hughes, along with three other individuals, was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
