SISSONVILLE, W.Va. — A Fourth of July party in Kanawha County ended in gunfire and investigators continue to sort through exactly what happened.
A woman suffered a gunshot wound to the arm in the incident reported about 2:40 a.m. near a gas well in the Sissonville community. Initially there was confusion in multiple reports called into the Kanawha County 911 center which indicated multiple shooters and multiple victims.
Authorities have now been able to narrow it down to a single gunshot victim who is recovering. Witnesses estimated there were more than 200 people at the gathering.
The shooting came at the end of a party the remote location near a gas well off Second Creek Road in Kanawha County to celebrate Independence Day. The area is a frequent gathering spot for parties according to the Sheriff’s Department. Deputies initially detained and questioned a number of the individuals found at the scene, but none was charged in the shooting. However, one man was charged with obstruction, but deputies say his actions were unrelated to the shooting.
Deputies say several leads are being followed up today as they try to determined the identity of the shooter and what led to the gunfire.
