Bluefield man charged in child abuse-related death

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — A Mercer County man is charged with child abuse resulting in serious injury.

Jacob Lee Richards, 25, of Bluefield, was arrested Wednesday after his 10-month-old daughter was taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Officials from the Bluefield Police Department said the child’s injuries were consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. The child died at a Roanoke hospital Wednesday night.

Miku Leftwich of the Mercer County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said an arraignment hearing held in Mercer County Magistrate Court Thursday morning set Richards’ bond for $1 million cash.

A date is not yet set for Richards’ preliminary hearing.

Richards is being held at the Southern Regional Jail.
