Body recovered from river near Wheeling Island

WHEELING, W.Va. — The search is over for the body of a man who reportedly fell into the Ohio River near Wheeling Island.

Authorities on Thursday recovered the body of Jerry Dowd Jr., 32, nearly 40 hours after he fell into the water.

His body was discovered near the marina on Wheeling Island. Dowd’s friends tell officials he fell into the Ohio River late Tuesday night near the Aetnaville Bridge.

The search lasted for about 18 hours over the course of two days.

Crews with the Wheeling Fire Department, Wheeling Police Department and Ohio Search and Rescue were all involved in the search effort.

An autopsy is being conducted by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.
