QB Lowe picks West Virginia, aiming to play baseball too

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Perhaps Dana Holgorsen landed his quarterback of the future. Maybe Randy Mazey found an arm for the weekend rotation.

Trey Lowe hopes he can become both.

The grandson of College Football Hall-of-Fame linebacker Woodrow Lowe and one of 2018’s most intriguing dual-sport prospects, Lowe committed to West Virginia on Tuesday over offers from North Carolina, Illinois, Houston, Memphis and Southern Miss.

“I always knew that I wanted to play both sports. I’ve been doing it my entire life so I always wanted to do it in college,” Lowe told Rivals.com. “I talked with (WVU) about it and they were right on board with it.”

Rivals writer Keenan Cummings reported Lowe plans to take advantage of the December signing period and enroll early at WVU.

New Mountaineers offensive coordinator Jake Spavital made Lowe one of his top recruiting priorities during the spring. With 4.7 speed at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Lowe passed for 1,256 yards and 14 touchdowns last fall, completing 61 percent of his passes while throwing four interceptions.

Rivals ranks him a three-star prospect and the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback for 2018, while ESPN rates him 228th overall and 13th among pocket passers.

Lowe becomes West Virginia’s first quarterback commit for next year, though the Mountaineers recently added Miami transfer Jack Allison, who will become eligible as a sophomore in 2018.

“He makes excellent decisions throwing the ball and has a firm grasp on when to stick in the pocket and when its time to tuck the ball  and take off,” Cummings said. “Don’t sleep on Lowe’s ability to move the chains with his feet. He is deceptively fast and shows flashes of being elusive.”

Lowe also holds offers from Arkansas State, South Alabama, UNC-Charlotte and Army.
