Trial begins for Randolph County man accused of trying to kill State Trooper

ELKINS, W.Va. — The trial of the Randolph County man facing attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking a State Police trooper last March begins Wednesday.

Nathaniel Ray Wegman, 28, of Elkins, is accused of attempted murder. Investigators said Wegman attacked Trooper First Class J.J. Cornelius last March. Cornelius had been attempting to take Wegman into custody after serving a warrant on an outstanding felony charge against Wegman from out of state.

Wegman fled from Cornelius on foot. He then jumped into Mill Creek. At that time, investigators said that Cornelius and Wegman were caught in a struggle. Wegman is accused of holding Cornelius’s head under water. Cornelius is then said to have fought him off using his knife.

Wegman was later captured in the Huttonsville area.

The case is being handled by Upshur County Prosecuting Attorney David Godwin.
