Arkansas murder suspect caught in Clarksburg

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A man wanted for murder in Arkansas is in custody after being apprehended Thursday by multiple law enforcement agencies in Clarksburg.

Curtis Dorsey, 33, of Little Rock, was found at an apartment located on Mulberry Avenue in Clarksburg.

Dorsey is alleged to have shot 35-year-old Sharniece Hughes multiple times outside of her home on Mabelvale Pike in broad daylight.

According a press release from Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Dorsey and Hughes had previously been in a relationship and were business partners owning a food truck. Dorsey’s black Toyota Tundra was observed fleeing the area shortly after the shooting.

Detectives from the Little Rock Police Department conducted an investigation of an alleged shooting that occurred on Sept. 5, 2016. Their investigation led them to believe Dorsey was the person who engaged in the criminal activity and a warrant for his arrest was obtained on Sept. 6, 2016.

Following the issuance of the warrant, the US Marshals assistance was immediately requested to locate Dorsey. Deputy Marshals from Arkansas began searching for Dorsey in Arkansas and Pennsylvania.

On Oct. 16, 2016, Dorsey was located in El Paso, TX, but fled from the police, crashed through a barrier, and crossed the border into Mexico. US Marshals were working with the authorities in Mexico to locate and arrest the subject, but Dorsey reentered the United States prior to that happening. Deputy Marshals in Arkansas continued to search for Dorsey until catching a break yesterday.

Deputies gathered information that Dorsey was living at the apartment on Mulberry Ave. A lead was forwarded to the US Marshals office in Clarksburg for further investigation. After receiving the lead, Deputy Marshals and Task Force Officers immediately began responding to the area and investigating the information.

After confirming the information was correct, assistance from the Harrison County and Clarksburg Police Department SWAT teams was requested. Both Swat teams responded to conduct the arrest.

During the arrest, entry was made into the apartment, and Dorsey was observed going out of a window of the third story apartment. After refusing commands to go back into the apartment, Dorsey jumped from the window and fell to the ground. Dorsey was taken into custody after he landed.

Dorsey sustained multiple non-life threatening injuries from the fall and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Following release from the hospital, Dorsey will be charged as a fugitive from justice and will appear in Harrison County court prior to being returned to Arkansas.

Based on observations made in the apartment by officers, the Greater Harrison County Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force obtained a search warrant for the apartment. During the search warrant 4.1 oz of methamphetamine, 1 oz of heroin and an additional 23 stamps of heroin, 3 grams of marjuana and $3,640 of cash was located. The Task Foce is investigating possible charges for the items that were located.

“The expertise of the US Marshals Service and the ability to coordinate with state and local agencies led to the quick arrest of this subject,” Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny said. “If this subject had not been arrested, he would likely still be committing crimes in our community.

Clarksburg Police Chief Robert Hilliard added: “The joint efforts of all agencies and swat teams led to a successful arrest. This coordination minimized risk to the officers and the public.”

The U.S. Marshals Service, Task Force Officers from the Morgantown Police Department, Bridgeport Police Department, Clarksburg Fire Department and Harrison County Emergency Management also assisted in the arrest.

The Little Rock Police Department also assisted in the fugitive investigation.
