ELKINS, W.Va. — A Randolph County jury found Nathaniel Wegman guilty of multiple charges after attacking a West Virginia State Police trooper in March 2016.
Wegman tried to drown Trooper First Class J.J. Cornelius, who was attempting to take Wegman into custody. Wegman had a warrant against him for an outstanding felony charge from another state, and wanted for questioning on a Randolph County robbery.
According to prosecutors, Cornelius had to fight off Wegman with a knife as Wegman was holding his head below water.
Wegman was convicted on charges of attempted murder, malicious assault and fleeing in an incident.
His sentencing date is scheduled for Oct. 4.
