W.Va. Division of Culture & History to celebrate 40th anniversary

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Division of Culture and History is welcoming the public to the Culture Center in Charleston Saturday to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. The event gets underway at 9 a.m.

A new exhibit commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I will open as part of Saturday’s celebration.

“They built it like you’re in the trenches in France. They have weaponry, they’ve got fiber collection which are uniforms, so we are opening that to commemoration the centennial of World War I,” said Randall Reid-Smith, commissioner of the state Division of Culture and History, on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

The exhibit will be on display for the next four months.

In addition, the agency be selling a special limited-edition Blenko vase in honor of the anniversary and West Virginia’s 154th birthday.

“We have the 154th birthday vase. We have 40 Blenko white-crackled glass with the blue and gold trim to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the agency,” Reid-Smith said.

The anniversary cake will be cut at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Presentations will be given throughout the day about West Virginia’s archives, museum collections and historic sites.

Saturday’s event is free and open to the public.
