Man charged with police garage break-in

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Nicholas County man was arrested and charged Sunday with allegedly breaking into a Charleston Police Department garage.

Robert Thomas Williams of Belva is charged with grand larceny.

Robert Thomas Williams, 27, of Belva, was spotted near the garage close to the Charleston Civic Center at around 3 a.m. Sunday, Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper said.

“He was interviewed and ultimately led police to some stolen items that he had taken from the garage after they found the entry point and some things out of place in the garage,” Cooper said.

Investigators found several generators and pieces of emergency equipment valued at $3,000, Cooper said.

Police were acting on a tip, Cooper said.

“One of our neighborhood assistance officers saw him lurking around, acting suspicious and notified some of the Charleston police officers working the area. They then confronted him and were able to get to the bottom of what he was up to,” Cooper said.

Police also arrested a woman who they believe was Williams’ getaway driver.
