DNR urges caution in online search for hunting and fishing license

DNR PRESS RELEASE

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources reminds the public to exercise caution when searching the internet for information about hunting and fishing licenses.

“Several customers recently have reported websites that sell information about hunting and fishing in the Mountain State that is available to the public for free,” said Charles Kennedy, director of customer relations for the WVDNR. “These websites can be confusing, and some customers thought they were purchasing a license when they were not.”

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources’ official website is wvdnr.gov. This site provides links to hunting and fishing regulations and other valuable information about hunting and fishing. The DNR’s online license system can be accessed at either wvhunt.com or wvfish.com. This is the only website where licenses can be purchased online.

There are websites that offer information and links to official DNR websites, but Kennedy says caution should be exercised whenever a site other than the WVDNR’s official site is asking for credit card information.

Consumers with questions or complaints can contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808, the Eastern Panhandle Consumer Protection Office in Martinsburg at 304-267-0239 or visit the office online at www.wvago.gov.
