Wheeling area flash flooding claims life, search continues for second victim

TRIADELPHIA, W.Va. — A man died in connection with flash flooding Sunday night in Ohio County.

Emergency crews responded to the Browns Run Road area in Triadelphia after reports that a van had rolled over into a swollen Wheeling Creek. Two people were believed to be in the vehicle.

First responders spotted a man hanging on to a guardrail. They were able to pull him to safety where they began CPR. Michael Alan Grow, 24, of Browns Run, died a short time later, the Ohio County Sheriff’s Department said.

A search for a 19-year-old woman, believed to be Grow’s girlfriend, then began. Ohio County Sheriff Tom Howard said a search for the body continued Monday morning. Helicopters and other equipment are being used, Howard said.

“We’re trying to stay positive but unfortunately we are probably looking at a recovery situation,” Howard said.

The sheriff’s department has been in contact with the woman’s family.
