Hardy County man accused of hit-and-run

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — A Hardy County man was arrested last week in connection to the death of a Grant County man.

Joshua Evans, of Oil Fields, allegedly hit Robert Shoemaker, of Petersburg, with his truck. According to a criminal complaint filed in Grant County Magistrate Court, Shoemaker’s body was found 25 feet over an embankment off Welton Orchard Road.

Grant County Sheriff’s Department said they believe Shoemaker died July 10 as a result of a hit-and-run. Authorities discovered his body four days later.

One witness said they saw Evans going down the road with a heavily damaged windshield. Another person noticed the windshield was missing. When they asked Evans as to why, he replied he had “hit some and they had died.”

Authorities found the truck in Hardy County with the exterior re-painted and its identification numbers removed.

Evans has been charged with second-degree murder. His bail was set at $350,000 cash only.
