Man suspected of lighting woman on fire in custody

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The man accused of setting a woman on fire Sunday was identified and taken into custody Monday evening.

Carl T. MaGhee was found in the Kanawha City area. According to authorities, he is from California.

He was expected to be arraigned Monday on arson, attempted murder and malicious wounding charges.

This comes after the city announced a $2,500 award for information leading to a suspect’s arrest.

MaGhee allegedly doused Rachele Jarrett, 44, in gasoline, lit her on fire before walking away. Jarrett and her boyfriend were on the porch of an empty Randolph Street home at the time.

Jarrett is in critical condition at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital burn unit.

Investigators said a man matching MaGhee’s description kicked in a door of a Wyoming Street home, poured accelerant onto the floor and attempted to light the structure on fire.
