West Virginia American Legion Baseball Tournament underway in Harrison County

HARRISON COUNTY, W.Va. — Morgantown, Wheeling and Elkins earned victories during Day One of the 2017 West Virginia State American Legion Baseball Tournament.

Morgantown pitcher J.T Stegmaier allowed a run in the first, and then settled in as he shut down South Charleston the rest of the way as Morgantown beat South Charleston 4-1.

Stegmaier also drove in two runs on the day. Connor Kelly and Andrew Berry also had RBI for Post 2.

Morgantown has now won 12 consecutive games.

Also Wednesday, Wheeling catcher Chad Harper raced around from first on a base hit to score the go-ahead run in the 7th. Harper had tied the game earlier in that inning with an RBI hit. Wheeling went on to beat Romney 5-4.

Wheeling has won back to back West Virginia American Legion state championships.

Elkins rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the final three innings to beat Bridgeport 6-4. Cole Harlan drove in the go-ahead run for Elkins.

Here’s the schedule for Day Two on Thursday:

  • South Charleston faces Romney in an elimination game at 12 p.m.
  • Morgantown plays Bridgeport at 3:30 p.m, Bridgeport must win to stay alive.
  • Wheeling will then face Elkins at 7:00 p.m. as both teams are 1-0.

All games of the tournament are being played at the Bridgeport Athletic Complex. ​
