Red Cross opens shelters for flood vicitms in Marion County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The American Red Cross is assisting flood victims in the Northern Panhandle and north central West Virginia following devastating flooding.

The Red Cross opened two shelters in Marion County for residents impacted by Friday night’s storm. The shelters are located at North Marion High School in Farmington and Hundred High School in Hundred.

Erica Mani, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross West Virginia, said they want to ensure that everyone affected has a safe and comforting place to stay.

“The goal is to alleviate the suffering that’s happening from the loss of so much from these floods and give people hope and let them know that there are people there to support them and to help them make a plan to recover,” Mani said.

Crews were on the ground Sunday and continue to stay in the area for several days to assess damaged homes.

“We are working with multiple Red Cross teams out in the field doing damage assessments and doing bulk distribution of supplies throughout the areas that are affected,” Mani said.

Volunteers with the Red Cross are handing out emergency relief supplies at several distribution sites in northern West Virginia.

“We are handing out cleaning supplies and other bulk supplies through our distribution route, so we’re mobile when we’re doing that,” Mani said.

Mani said they know how to serve communities impacted by high water, especially after the historic flood of June 2016.

“Unfortunately, with everything that we experienced last year, we at the Red Cross and all of the partners out there that are active in disaster — we’re practiced at doing this. We’re out there doing everything we can, taking the lessons we learned from last year,” she said.
