Operation Welcome Home still seeking employers for veterans job fair

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Though still more than two months away, Operation Welcome Home is heavily encouraging employers and veterans to sign up for the 2017 Veterans & Dependents Job Fair.

On October 26, 2017, the Hazel and J.W. Ruby Community Center is expected to host around 50 agencies, companies, and employers who are looking to fill vacant positions with qualified veterans and dependents of veterans.

“We’re still looking for any employer that wants to fill their vacancies with veterans or their dependents and also any veterans that want to come out and look for what might be their next job or even career,” Brett Simpson said Thursday on Morgantown AM.

Simpson, the program manager for Operation Welcome Home, said employers will have an opportunity to hire people who have already proven their strong work ethic.

“They really do have a unique set of skills that folks don’t often realize — their reliability and things along those lines,” he said.

The job fair is one of the marquee events for Operation Welcome Home, which specializes in job placement for veterans and their dependents.

“What’s true about veterans in general is, they are on time, they can follow directions, they can follow a check list,” Simpson said. “They take orders. They can give orders in the absence of orders.”

Operation Welcome Home isn’t just trying to pawn veterans off either, Simpson said. They’ve committed to staffing their own team with veterans like Simpson. That includes adding new hires to the team.

“We really need some extra staff up there,” Simpson said. “We’re going to be opening a full-time position for someone to help out with our veterans program, outreach, links with the community, and things along those lines.”

Operation Welcome Home operates in the Morgantown area.
