CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Deputies from the Jacksonville, Florida Sheriff’s Department visited West Virginia as part of their investigation into the death of an 11 year old girl.
The body of the deceased child was discovered Sunday after a car wreck on a remote stretch of U.S. Route 250 in Pocahontas County just over a mile from the Virginia border. The child’s mother, Erica Newsome, 37, of Jacksonville, is lodged in the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver facing charges of concealment of a dead body.
A crime scene was discovered at Newsome’s home in Jacksonville soon after her arrest in West Virginia according to Florida authorities. The crime scene was processed and foul play is suspected in the child’s death. A cause of death has not been determined.
Jacksonville deputies were in West Virginia Monday to review evidence as part of their ongoing investigation. Additional charges in the case are expected, but it’s unclear when that will happen.
West Virginia State Police say witnesses pointed them toward the body which they observed Newsome remove from the car soon after the accident in Pocahontas County. The child was found about 150 feet over an embankment near the accident scene.
