Greenbrier County Democratic leader steps down

LEWISBURG, W.Va. — The chairman of the Greenbrier County Democratic Party executive committee has resigned.

Paul Moya told the Charleston Gazette-Mail on Monday he resigned because Gov. Jim Justice’s switch to the Republican Party shows deeper problems with the leaders of the state party.

Justice had previously been a Republican before joining the Democratic Party in 2015. He announced Thursday he would go back to the Republican Party, saying he felt Democrats in the West Virginia Legislature left him behind.

Moya said he believes party leadership set itself up for last week’s announcement when it pushed Justice in the 2016 gubernatorial primary over challengers Jeff Kessler and Booth Goodwin.
