CHARLESTON, W.Va. — For the first time since cross-selling of the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games began seven years ago both current jackpots are over the $300 million mark.
Mega Millions is at $350 million with the next drawing set for Tuesday night. The Powerball jackpot will be at least $307 million for Wednesday night’s drawing.
There’s been an increase in sales in recent days for both games in West Virginia, according to West Virginia Lottery Public Relations Manager Randy Burnside.
“These are definitely jackpot-driven games so when the jackpots increase we do see more play and we are seeing an increase in both games,” Burnside said.
West Virginia has a number of jackpot winners over the years. The last one was Randy Smith in August 2010. There have been nearly 2 dozen $1 million winners in the years since, Burnside said.
“While everyone wants to dream big about these large jackpot amounts, there are other great prizes in the price structures for both games,” he said.
Just last weekend a person in Fayette County purchased a $50,000 winning Powerball ticket.
