“The Glass Castle” to be shown in Welch

WASHINGTON — A film based on a memoir of an author who grew up in West Virginia will be shown in McDowell County after it was originally not scheduled to be.

Several scenes of “The Glass Castle” was filmed in Welch in May 2016, though it is not known if any made it into the final cut. The film is about Jeannette Walls’ life growing up in poverty and living in multiple places across the United States, including rural West Virginia. The movie stars Brie Larson and Woody Harrelson.

The 2005 book it is based on spent 261 weeks on The New York Times’ Best Seller list.

The movie, scheduled to be released Friday, was not originally going to be shown McDowell 3 Marquee Cinemas in Welch. The theater, Marquee Cinema’s corporate office and film company Lionsgate received multiple complaints as a result.

West Virginia Delegate Ed Evans, D-McDowell, brought the issue to the attention of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. Manchin’s office got in contact with Linosgate representatives, who agreed to show the film in Welch.

“I appreciate all the hard work my good friend Delegate Ed Evans did to make this possible,” Manchin said on Twitter. “It was truly a team effort!”

The movie will have first showings at 3:40 pm., 6:40 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. on Friday
