Attorney General unveils new guidelines to prevent skimming

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced Thursday a list of guidelines for convenience stores and gas stations as part of an effort to protect credit card information.

The rules are aimed at eliminating skimmers, or devices used to steal credit or debit card information at gas station pumps.

The guidelines instruct employees to replace factory locks on pumps with unique locks and keys, record dispenser information and create a pump inspection process.

“In a matter of seconds, someone’s personal financial information can be stolen, so gas stations should be on the lookout for suspicious activity to protect consumers,” Morrisey said in a statement.

According to the attorney general’s office, the West Virginia Oil & Marketers Association and the National Association of Convenience Stores support the rules.
