Hurricane softball coach Caldwell steps down after four titles

HURRICANE, W.Va. — Hurricane softball coach Josh Caldwell has stepped down, accepting an assistant principal job in Putnam County at Poca.

In nine years, he and his staff built what is currently Class AAA’s softball power program.

“It’s tough, but I felt like it was time to get into administration and progress my career there,” Caldwell said. “It will also free up some time to spend with my daughter who will be at the age where she will start playing this spring in little league.”

He led Hurricane most recently to three straight Class AAA state championships and overall four titles in the last five years.

“We had a trust and family atmosphere in our program,” Caldwell said. “We had everyone buying in. It was never ‘me or I’ – I think that went a long way in the trust factor with our team. That carried us through when we were in key moments down the stretch – the kids trusted each other and played for each other, which went a long way to our success.”

Caldwell expects assistant Meghan Stevens to take over the head coaching reins — he’s already met with and told the team of his departure as well.

“They know I will still be around a lot – my daughter is still going to be one of the bat girls,” he said. “Meghan (Stevens) has been around a long time, too, and she will do great.

“It will be a good thing. She’s been there nine years, she knows the game really well and she’ll be excellent,” Caldwell said. “There will be very little change with the program. She’ll continue to get them to play at a high level and have the same success.”

Hurricane will return a plethora of talent in 2018, losing just three seniors from this past season’s state championship team.
