Man dead after unusual behavior around traffic

NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. — A Nicholas County man died Wednesday after acting erratically around traffic Wednesday.

Nicholas County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to the scene at U.S. Route 19 near Birch River around 9 a.m. According to a release, officers saw the man, 43-year-old Jeremy Bennett, of Muddlety, in traffic, causing drivers to swerve around him.

As deputies attempted to get him out of traffic, Bennett began to act irrational and combative. He then ran away from officers, who were able to arrest Bennett after a short struggle.

“The individual began to show signs of a medical emergency,” a statement from Sheriff William Nunley said. “Officers radioed for a (sic) ambulance to assist with the subject.”

Officers performed CPR on Bennett until medical help arrived. He was then transported to Summersville Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s department said they believe Bennett was “intoxicated” by an unknown substance at the time.

An investigation is underway.
