DOH: What’s left of Carrollton Bridge ‘salvageable’

CARROLLTON, W.Va. — What’s remaining of a Carrollton Covered Bridge that was damaged in a fire earlier this month is salvageable, the Division of Highways told MetroNews Thursday.

“A consultant has inspected the remaining structure and found that the load supporting members of the structure are salvageable,” DOH Communications Specialist Carrie Jones said. “Clean up efforts are underway.”

The bridge, built in 1856 in Barbour County, went up in flames Aug. 10. The state Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the blaze was intentionally set along with two other fires at fishing camps close by on the Buckhannon River. An investigation is underway.

The deck of the bridge is concrete. Most of the fire was to the upper structure of the span.

The DOH doesn’t know yet when the bridge will reopen.
