Clarksburg’s Chestnut Street project nearing completion

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — After nearly two years of being closed to through traffic, South Chestnut Street in Clarksburg will reopen within the next few weeks.

Clarksburg City Manager Martin Howe said the Department of Highways has been working diligently to meet the projected end date.

“Their completion date was supposed to be, I think, the end of the September, but obviously I think they’re going to complete it much before then,” Howe said. “We were anticipating hopefully they would do it before Labor Day, but I’m not sure if they’re going to be able to get it done or not by then.”

Howe said he visited the construction site last week to see what final touches crews still had to complete.

“They have sidewalks still to complete, a little bit more curb,” he said. “They’ll have the final laying of the asphalt, as well as guardrails. That’s a majority of it.”

The South Chestnut Street project was completed in three phases, with the third and final phase set out to bid this spring.

“Phase one primarily was retaining walls,” Howe said. “They put retaining walls in to stabilize the roadway and the hillside on the downslope side.

“Phase two was predominately utility work,” he added. “That included sanitary and storm drains that were either replaced or new ones installed. Other utilities included the water lines that were relocated, some of the gas lines were replaced or moved from the right of way, and then also some of the power lines and utility poles were moved further from the roadway.”

It’s been five years since the announcement that the state Department of Highways would be partnering with the city of Clarksburg to complete the project, and officials are eager to see its culmination.

“We’re very excited that this roadway will be completed and reopen to the public,” Howe said. “It is a main thoroughway for the city. It helps alleviate traffic along Main and Milford streets, as well as Buckhannon Pike, because so much traffic is overloaded during the school year since there’s detour routes in place.”

Chestnut Street isn’t the only road in the city of Clarksburg that has been repaired.

This year, Clarksburg restarted with year one of its 17 year paving project of the city’s streets.

“Our annual paving project concluded probably about a week ago,” Howe said. “It was probably the largest that we’ve done in history for the city.”
