West Virginia finalizes its 2017-18 basketball schedule

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia will play five Saturday-Monday combinations during the nine-week Big 12 schedule, according to the finalized league basketball schedule.

The Mountaineers released their nonconference schedule months ago, making Thursday’s news simply about the sequence of its Big 12 round-robin.

Most notable:

— Big 12 action opens once more with two road games, Dec. 29 at Oklahoma State and then New Year’s Day at Kansas State. Because of West Virginia’s cross-country travel issues, coach Bob Huggins continues advocating for his team getting the early road swing before classes begin.

— West Virginia hosts 13-time defending league champion Kansas on Monday, Jan. 15, and pays a return visit to the Jayhawks on Saturday, Feb. 17.

— The Mountaineers have a five-day cushion before facing Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 27 in the much-anticipated SEC-Big 12 Challenge. Afterward, they have a four-day layoff preceding a Wednesday, Jan. 31 game at Iowa State.

— With regard to the traveling issue, Huggins strongly campaigns against late road tip-offs on weeknights. This season they’ll have two 9 p.m. starts out of five midweek road games.

— Senior Night recognizing guards Jevon Carter and Daxter Miles will be Monday, Feb. 26 against Texas Tech.

— With seedings typically on the line, the regular season concludes Saturday, March 3 at Texas.
